Talking About Money

This is absolutely not what I mean
Most of us were raised to understand that we don't talk about money in mixed company. But why? My friends and I talk about everything (everything!) with each other. I know when they lost their virginity, how they feel about their mother-in-law, and what size shoes they wear.

I am very close with 4 women who all got promotions or raises this year. How exciting! I also know that one of them had to negotiate hard for a higher rate because what her competition makes was a mystery. How is that fair? It isn't.

When I worked at Children's Hospital, I was promoted quickly through two positions in one year and benefited from salary increases both times. I was working alongside a woman who was 30 years my senior and had been with the hospital for 25 years. One day I used her terminal and saw her paystub and noticed that she made $10 less per hour than I did. That is $20,000 less per year before taxes. How is that fair? It isn't.

Those are workplace examples, but these types of things happen in the other parts of your life, too.

Information is key and knowledge is power.

To that end, I truly believe that the best thing we can do for ourselves when it comes to money is to adopt an air of transparency. I mean, don't flaunt the price of your new car to your friend who can't make rent, but absolutely tell him how you talked the salesman down to your pricepoint. When the time comes, he might be empowered by that information to do the same.

In an effort to start the conversation, I am going to be totally transparent with our budget. This week I am sitting down with my husband to work the numbers and I will publish it here. Because I do respect our need need for privacy I will work in percentages, but it will still be crystal clear.

I have reached out to a few friends who have interesting money stories and those chats will be featured in a new series I am running called How Do You Money? If you are interested in sharing your story, email me! mindonyourmoneyblog@gmail.com
